Volume Three - Mon Ami - How The Sketch Came To Life

Volume Three - Mon Ami - How The Sketch Came To Life

My idea for the sketch for volume three is taken from the rides Erik and the Persian, Oded, took while hunting wanted criminals. The two were good friends, and, like most friends, they liked to either banter or have in-depth conversations with each other. These conversations usually took place in the evening around a fire and while eating a meal or just having a drink. Once more, I began putting my rough thoughts on paper while sitting around a campfire at Sunset Beach in California.

As I watched the fire lick toward the dark sky and several family members sitting on logs around that fire, I pictured Erik and Oded doing the same. The first picture on the right is a rough draft of my first thoughts. Again, I ask you to keep in mind that I’m a writer—not an artist—so please be kind and don’t laugh at my feeble attempt.

Since one of my daughters, Julie, lives in a wooded area in Grass Valley, CA, her location was the perfect place to take pictures for this scene, so arrangements were made to visit her. My grandsons, Alex and Colton, played the part of Oded and Erik respectively. I took many pictures of them and some of them are shown on the right. The one I picked for the artist to work from is on the left. Then I sent my sketch and the picture I chose to my artist, Judy Sava-Coppola, and she created the finished sketch for the third novel shown below.

I hope you enjoyed this small tour of my creative process.
